Fabulous film and again, that fall foliage...September 29-October 3 brings independent film and filmakers to Aspen. The festival includes feature length films, documentaries, tributes to world-class artists and, this year, a special evening celebrating the 70th Anniversary of John Lennon's birth with a screening of "The Quarrymen: The Band That Became The Beatles." It's a tremendous way to witness the deepened colors and patchwork hillsides, running the Golden Leaf Half-Marathon along the Government Trail from Snowmass to Aspen. Runners from across the nation will feast their eyes, and fire up their legs, this weekend. The Golden Leaf has been named the "Best Half Marathon" and ranks among the most scenic trails imaginable. For hikers and bikers, try the Government Trail (just maybe not on race-day morning!) for some of the best of the area's fall foliage sightings. Hike as far or as near as you'd like; the view is just as scenic when you turn around!
The colors are changing, most likely to red, as Ruggerfest 2010 welcomes the best of scrum from all over the world. Watch the high sports action, and inevitable carnage, with beer, barbeques and an always rowdy good time. Matches take place on both Wagner Field and Rio Grande Park and, as always, informal gatherings take over local pubs around town; for complete info, www.aspenruggerfest.com.
