Aspen Square Daily News
Chosen by Trail Runner Magazine as one of "America's 14 Most Scenic Races," the annual Golden Leaf Half Marathon takes place today, September 22. The 13.1-mile race begins at Fanny Hill at the Snowmass Ski area and winds up and down the mountain and ends in Aspen, with many obstacles inherent in the back country course, including a 980-foot gain in altitude and 1,712-foot descent. One of the great joys of fall in Aspen is watching the descent of gold leaves from the tips of the ski slopes down into town. The change is well underway, with patches of bright gold on the top ridges of Aspen and Red mountains. Peak color happens in stages here, so higher elevations will flame out pretty soon, with full color expected in the next 10 days. That means you need to get up to Aspen Square and see the splendor for yourself. Check out our Current Specials page, in the Rates + Specials section, for details on last-minute lodging specials.
If your idea of fun is to cheer on big, hairy guys in shorts and padded bonnets, Aspen Ruggerfest is the place to be from September 13-16! Now in its 45th season, Aspen Ruggerfest combines brawn, beer, excitement and great cheer as teams from all over the country compete for titles in each division. Not just a sport for the young, some of the most competitive matches occur amongst the “old boys” divisions of over 35, 45 and 55.
