    BEYOND BLUEGRASS

The fifth annual festival of acoustic music returns to the Wheeler Opera House in March. Things get underway on March 16th with Psychograss, one of the most eclectic groups in bluegrass/string music today. Then, on March 17th, the French Acadian band Vishten brings their unusual mixture of French, Irish and Scottish styles to the stage. On March 18th, Blue Highway, the super group on the circuit at the moment, will perform. Wrapping up the festival, Donna the Buffalo (pictured), the group that brings together reggae, Zydeco, Cajun and folk traditions to form a funky and danceable groove, takes the stage on March 19th.

    SPRING JAM

From March 17th – 20th, the fifth annual Aspen/Snowmass Spring Jam will take place. This 4-day fusion event kicks off on St. Patrick’s Day with a big air contest and a concert in Snowmass featuring The Prodigals.

On Friday, the “KickAspen” Big Air contest in Aspen will get the crowd oohing and aahing as skiers and boarders from all over compete on a huge jump at the base of Aspen Mountain.

On Saturday, the Aspen Rail Revolution has tricksters showing off their latest moves on rails right on the gondola plaza! That competition is followed by a core party right in downtown Aspen!

    LAST DANCE

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet wraps up its winter season with the dance troupe MOMIX and their performance of Baseball, Moses Pendleton’s freewheeling tribute to America’s national pastime. According to Time magazine, Baseball is an “unqualified homerun” with music by James Brown, Queen, Loreen McKennitt, and Ali Farka Toure, among others.

Performances will be March 18th and 19th at 7:30 pm, with a matinee on March 19th at 4:30 pm.

All performances are at the Aspen District Theatre and tickets are $20-$58.

    BIG-AIR FRIDAYS!

The annual Snowmass Big-Air contest combines skiers and boarders as they show their stuff to win cash prizes. It’s as much fun to watch as it is to participate! Aspen Square front desk agent and bellman, John Nicoletta, will be participating in these competitions, so get out there and cheer him on! The contest runs from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm every Friday in March on Fanny Hill at Snowmass.

A special Thursday event is planned for March 17th for Spring Jam (see above). After the contest, the fun continues with live music, prize giveaways and fireworks!

    AMERICA’S UPHILL

On Saturday, March 19th, hundreds of uphill racers will strap on snowshoes or skis with climbing skins and make the 2.5 mile trek up Aspen Mountain. This uphill race, in its 17th year, has become a rite of spring in Aspen. The race begins at the base of Little Nell and climbs 3267 feet up the Aspen Mountain ski area finishing at the Sundeck Restaurant at an elevation of 11,212 feet. Race time is 7:00 am. Registration is $25 before race day or $35 the day of the race.

    ASPEN SHORTSFEST 2005!

Widely considered the premier short film and video showcase in North America, this five-day feast of films, filmmakers and fun features competitive screenings, workshops, panels and special presentations. See the coolest mini-movies from all over the world and meet the filmmaking stars of today and tomorrow.
The festival runs from April 6 to 10.

The complete program for shortsfest 2005 will be online in early March. »

    WHERE IS HE NOW?

Aspen Square’s own Olympic Snowboard Racer ended his season early this winter, due to a broken collarbone in the Winter X-Games here in Aspen. He had surgery, and is just about all healed up now – but he missed out on the rest of the winter race season. Too bad. He continues to travel all over the United States, telling his story of organ transplant awareness and promoting his new book. Check out Chris’s own web site: www.chrisklug.com. He will be back racing again next winter, and it is an Olympic year!
