    GREAT SPRING SKIING

The final weeks of the 2006 ski season are upon us. Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk are scheduled to close on Sunday, April 2nd, and Aspen Mountain and Snowmass will close for the season on Sunday, April 16th. The great snowfall in the early part of the season has provided all four mountains with a terrific base, and now we are experiencing warm spring-like weather, providing our guests with some fabulous spring skiing! Don't miss out! There is still time to get some turns in!

    MUSIC AT THE WHEELER

Music abounds at the Wheeler Opera House this month with performances ranging from folk to hip hop reggae. After two performances by Lyle Lovett at the beginning of the month, Colorado native Judy Collins will return to the Wheeler for one show only on March 13th. Then on March 16th, new age pianist Danny Wright takes the stage with special guests Byron Mino and Jospeh Vincelli. One day later on March 17th, Tim Piper plays John Lennon (shown above) in "A Day in His Life - A John Lennon Anthology." And finally, on March 25th, Michael Franti of Spearhead will perform a special solo acoustic evening that will also feature his film, "I Know I'm Not Alone," about his visit to Iraq, Israel & Palestine.

    HBO COMEDY FEST

Founded in 1995, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival sponsored by HBO has a mission to discover, support and nurture comedic talent through the presentation of fresh, original voices in live performance, writing, film and television. This year's festival will be held March 8th - 12th, and many great performances are planned including a live performance of Garrison Keilor's "A Prairie Home Companion," Jim Henson's Muppets Improv, and various "Stand Up Showcases," featuring the brightest new comedians.

    SPRING JAM

From March 16th - 19th, the sixth annual Aspen/Snowmass Spring Jam will take place. The premier spring festival in the Rockies, the 4-day fusion event kicks off on Thursday with a concert in Snowmass, band TBA. Friday brings the green out in every individual with Aspen/Snowmass' St. Patrick's Day celebration. A Big Air competition will be held under the lights at the base of Aspen Mountain on Saturday, March 18th, and later that evening, the 3rd Annual Core Party with live music, street performers, graffiti artists, and other special effects takes the action deep into the night.

    MORE MUSIC IN MARCH

The Aspen Music Festival's "Winter Music" series wraps up this month with a performance by the American Brass Quintet. On Friday, March 17th, this Aspen institution will return with a program that spans Renaissance classics, Civil War brass-band favourites, and commissions of their own. The recital will be at 7:30 p.m. in Harris Hall. Tickets are $52.

    AMERICA'S UPHILL

On Saturday, March 18th, hundreds of uphill racers will strap on snowshoes or skis with climbing skins and make the 2.5 mile trek up Aspen Mountain. This uphill race, in its 18th year, has become a rite of spring in Aspen. The race begins at the base of Little Nell and climbs 3267 feet up the Aspen Mountain ski area finishing at the Sundeck Restaurant at an elevation of 11,212 feet. Race time is 7:00 am. Registration is $25 before race day or $35 the day of the race.

    APRES SKI FOR THE MIND

Since 1998, the Aspen Writers' Foundation has presented an annual series of readings and talks with notable authors. "Winter Words" wraps up with a bang with best-selling author James Patterson, whose last 17 novels have topped the New York Times bestseller list! Patterson (shown above) will speak on March 18th at 5:30 pm at the Wheeler Opera House. Tickets are $20.

    LAST DANCE

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet wraps up its winter season with the dance troupe Diavolo from Los Angeles. Diavolo redefines dance through dynamic movement, with surrealistic sets that form an intrinsic part of each piece of work. Everyday items such as doors, chairs and stairways provide the back-drop for dramatic movement - leaping, flying, twirling - that creates metaphors for the challenge of relationships, the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain our humanity in an increasingly technological world. Performances will March 28th and 29th at 7:30 pm. All performances are at the Aspen District Theatre, and tickets are $20-$58.
