The tips of the surrounding mountains have been dusted with snow over the last few days. Which makes it the perfect time for the 8th presentation of The Meeting, from September 27-29. The premier gathering of snow sports filmmakers, athletes, sponsors, media and fans, The Meeting will deliver a packed schedule of the top 2012-2013 ski and snowboard movies at the Wheeler Opera House and at the Sundeck on top of Aspen Mountain. Chosen by Trail Runner Magazine as one of "America's 14 Most Scenic Races," the annual Golden Leaf Half Marathon takes place today, September 22. The 13.1-mile race begins at Fanny Hill at the Snowmass Ski area and winds up and down the mountain and ends in Aspen, with many obstacles inherent in the back country course, including a 980-foot gain in altitude and 1,712-foot descent. One of the great joys of fall in Aspen is watching the descent of gold leaves from the tips of the ski slopes down into town. The change is well underway, with patches of bright gold on the top ridges of Aspen and Red mountains. Peak color happens in stages here, so higher elevations will flame out pretty soon, with full color expected in the next 10 days. That means you need to get up to Aspen Square and see the splendor for yourself. Check out our Current Specials page, in the Rates + Specials section, for details on last-minute lodging specials.
