The highway crews had so much snow to plow and move away from the road over Independence Pass this spring, but the job is done now and the pass is open. The crews have it done now, and travelers can experience the majesty of the high country scenery once again. normally open from Memorial Day to late October, the pass is not kept clear in the winter. There is still amazing snow up on the sides of the pass road, and conditions can be icy. Drive carefully, and enjoy the views!
The word is official. Aspen Mountain will open for skiing for the Memorial Day Weekend. They may open the top of Aspen Mountain on subsequent weekends also, weather allowing. Following an amazing season and particularly major snow in the spring, there is still so much snow up on Aspen Mountain to allow for skiing, nearly a month after official closing of the ski season. The base is still over 70 inches on top! The gondola and Chair 3 -- Aspen Express - will be open, with reduced lift ticket rates; and the Sundeck Restaurant will be open.
