Sunday, September 9, Aspenites and friends are invited to the annual City of Aspen Community Picnic. The event takes place from 11am to 2pm at the Aspen Golf Club and includes plenty of events for the whole family including miniature golf, bocci ball, fishing, soccer, football, kite flying and a bounce house for the little ones. The Red Mountain Grill will cater a free BBQ-style lunch for the first 750 lucky people who line up. You can even bring the family dog - this is a dog friendly day! Participants are encouraged to walk, ride or take the bus as parking is very limited.
Once again Aspen Square is welcoming guests this weekend for the 40th annual Motherlode Volleyball Classic - one of Aspen's most popular Labor Day events. The five-day tournament begins tomorrow, Thursday August 30, and runs through Monday, with finals in the women's and men's open championship. Games will be played in downtown parks including Wagner and Koch - both a comfortable walk from Aspen Square. For more information about the tournament visit www.motherlodevolleyball.com.
What a great 24 hours we've had in Aspen! Yesterday afternoon we ran out to cheer on the winner of the Queen Stage - Colorado's own Tom Danielson. Just moments later, the peloton streamed by, hot on his heels. Today we were treated to the site of the entire race group warming up by making three passes past Aspen Square before they headed back up Independence Pass on the way to Beaver Creek. It was truly an only-at-Aspen Square moment! Today's image is of the race group massing at the starting line on Main Street.
