The first half of December is known for fewer crowds in Aspen Snowmass as it's positioned between the Thanksgiving and holiday seasons. You’ll experience fewer lift lines and everything from groomed runs to powder all to yourself. 

The ski areas will be opening additional runs at each resort throughout the month as conditions allow, making it a fun time of year to be on the slopes.

Ski Opening Day at Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk

Aspen Snowmass is home to four mountains; Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, and Buttermilk. Traditionally, Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open at Thanksgiving with Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk opening in December. 

This year Aspen Highlands is scheduled to open on Saturday, December 10th, 2022, and Buttermilk on Saturday, December 17th, 2022. Take advantage of these openings to catch the first tracks in the Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands or lap Tiehack at Buttermilk on opening day.

Celebrate the Holidays

The last twelve days of the month (December 20-31) are dubbed “The 12 Days of Aspen”. From Christmas tree lighting and cookie decorating, to a New Year’s Eve fireworks display, there is something for everyone.
