Wintersköl in Aspen is the perfect time to celebrate the beauty of winter in the Colorado Rockies and everything that includes: gorgeous scenery, picturesque snowstorms followed by bluebird days, unbeatable skiing and boarding and general enjoyment of the great outdoors. By the time Wintersköl rolls around in mid-January each year, the holidays are over, but the celebration continues in Aspen.
What is Wintersköl?
Wintersköl is a winter festival, founded in 1951 to celebrate Aspen’s embrace of its winter lifestyle. This annual event has become a beloved tradition and 2016 marks the 65th year. The year’s slogan, “Aged to Perfection,” perfectly captures the spirit of this enduring event and Aspen itself.
Wintersköl is more than any old winter festival, though; it’s a weekend-long happening filled with on-mountain and in-town activities.
The History of Wintersköl
It was 1951, and Aspen Mountain’s lifts weren’t running. Residents and visitors could have spent their days complaining of the cold and snow and shut themselves in for the winter. They could have done a whole lot of nothing; but they didn’t.
Instead, they created a unique Aspen celebration that’s still going strong. When you enjoy Wintersköl events and activities today, you can thank the ingenuity and independent spirit of the people who lived here in the early 1950s.
An Aspen ski holiday isn’t just about skiing. During Wintersköl, there’s so much to do, aside from tearing up the hill, that you’ll have a hard time choosing between events and activities.
