It’s wintertime. You and the family want the complete Aspen winter experience, and part of that is sledding at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC).
“Whoa Nelly” Sledding Hill
Grab your tubes and sleds, and head up Maroon Creek Rd. to the Aspen Recreation Center’s “Whoa Nelly” sledding hill. “Whoa Nelly” is the perfect hill for families. It has the ideal gradient for picking up speed and excitement on your ride down the hill. And at the bottom of the slope, the a wide-open stretch of field allows you to safely coast to a stop for a good 20 to 25 feet.
Once you’ve got your first run under your belt, head back up to the top. As you walk back to the starting line, you’ll have a great view of skiers and snowboarders ripping down the Thunderbowl run on Aspen Highlands Mountain.
After a sip of hot apple cider, prepare for your next descent. Will you go for another straight line to the bottom? Or, are you going to aim for one of the mini snow jumps built by another sledding enthusiast?
With you decision made, push off, and enjoy the ride! Then, repeat until you’re too tired to do it again!
Sledding at the Aspen Recreation Center (ARC) provides a memorable afternoon of fun, smiles, and laughter with the whole family.
Sleds are available for rent at the ARC for $5. The Miner’s Building, on Main Street across from Carl’s Pharmacy, also offers a selection of sleds.

“We've been staying here for 20 years, we find everything we need within a city block the hotel owns. Incredibly central and convenient to both restaurants and the Aspen Mountain Silver Queen gondola just across the street...we have been so well-served with a wonderful mountain view from our two-bedroom/two-bath with generous deck and fireplace that I ask for every Christmas now. We never rent a car and move from mountain to mountain on the free Aspen Skiiing Company buses just a block walk from the hotel. ”

“We were able to walk to all of our shopping and restaurant locations. Our room was very cozy and much bigger than anticipated, we rented the 1bedroom, 1 bath. The Manager and Francis were very helpful with all of our questions and had several suggestions for restaurants. When we come back we will definitely book here again.”

“This place and the staff are completely amazing. They made us feel so welcome and helped us and accommodated us at any moment. A special thanks to Max at check in for taking time to review a local map and take the time to suggest places to go. Best hotel experience ever.”
